Local Hong Kong ferry operator Coral Sea Ferry Limited has just taken delivery of its very first pure electric vessel — meet the "Coral Sea 88." Built under the supervision of Wah Kwong Maritime Service Limited and constructed by Guangzhou Seawinner Technology Company Limited, the new ferry has already secured classification certification from China Classification Society (CCS). Scheduled to set sail on the Sai Wan Ho to Kwun Tong route in the second half of 2026, it marks a quiet, clean, and exciting new chapter for Hong Kong's iconic harbour crossings.
Stretching 26 meters from bow to stern, the "Coral Sea 88" has room for 241 passengers. And when it comes to what matters most to the operator — real-world performance — this ferry delivers. It runs primarily on a bank of lithium iron phosphate batteries, backed by solar panels laid across the compass deck, which generate clean electricity to power every light on board. Just eight hours of charging keeps the vessel sailing all day long — a perfect rhythm that fits seamlessly into the company's existing ferry schedules.
Compared to conventional diesel ferries, the "Coral Sea 88" glides through the harbour with zero tailpipe emissions — and barely a whisper. Noise and vibration have been dramatically reduced. According to Coral Sea Ferry, that translates directly into a better commute for passengers on Victoria Harbour routes. Nowhere is this more true than on core urban runs like Sai Wan Ho to Kwun Tong, where a calm, smooth, and quiet journey isn't just a nice-to-have — it's a standout service advantage.
The "Coral Sea 88" is one of the very first electric ferries fully funded by the Hong Kong SAR Government's Electric Ferry Pilot Trial Scheme. Led by the Environmental Protection Department, the initiative is steering local ferry services toward a zero-emission future — and giving real, on-the-water muscle to the carbon reduction targets laid out in the Hong Kong's Climate Action Plan 2050.
